Serving Others

This book is slowly changing me. It is truly starting to click that it is far greater to serve others and do good deeds for others than it is to focus on me and what I\’m getting. Before I was a Christian, I would often say that everyone is selfish. People that act selflessly are only doing it because it makes them feel good, thus coming from a selfish place. But as a Christian, I know that this is not true. Today\’s adventure really had me thinking about that. We do good for others and we serve others not necessarily because we are called to, but because Jesus did it for us, hence creating that innate desire in us to do it for others. It\’s kind of like paying it forward. For anyone who has seen Pay it Forward knows the principle behind the movie, but it seems to me that there is a deeper principle. The little boy who starts the whole thing is a representative of Christ. Christ died for us, the ultimate good deed, and those of us who recognize the truth of this, have a desire to do the same for others. Anyone who is truly walking with the Lord has some sort of passion that involves compassion for others, whether it\’s getting involved in some sort of ministry, or helping out extra around work, or picking up someone from the airport. We have God\’s love and we desperately want to show it to others.
For the longest time at work, I have been doing whatever I can, cutting some corners, to get out an extra ten minutes early. For what? Looking back, what has that ten extra minutes gotten me? Last night, I was closing with the new guy and I stayed at least an extra hour longer than I needed to, just to go above and beyond in my closing duties. Someone at work told me about a week ago that I just skate through work and get out of there as fast as I can, leaving things unfinished. I can simply say that he doesn\’t know what he\’s talking about, or I can let this pierce my heart the way it\’s supposed to and do something about it. His remark, mixed with this book, and realizing that my actions can do so much more, than my words can to bring someone to Christ, have made me desire to start giving my 110% at work. I just pray for God\’s love and joy to fill me anew every morning so that I can portray His love to those around me!
